Re: computer question |
Whatever you get make sure you reformat (format, not convert) the FAT or FAT32 file system structure to NTFS or your data transfer rates will be glacial if the drive is larger than 3-4 Gig.
Word of warning - I have a 10 Terabyte drive and it took close to 48 hours to reformat from FAT32 to NTFS.

Re: computer question |
Isn't 10 terabytes supposed to be the capacity of the human brain? I'd just commit it all to memory ...

it is a lot of space, but here at the office, we're looking at multiple Petabytes. I think that I have 14 EMC DMX Frames on the floor.

Kind of like having the the new Dallas Cowboys stadium as your dining room - lots of unused and wasted space?

"...lots of unused and wasted space..."
Our working hypothesis around here: we strive to fill all unused space with analysis of drivel, linkages to threads that have been linked before, and of course, reanalysis of the prior analysis of drivel (my favorite) because we forgot the link that would have linked us to all of it the first time around (which in fact is usually the second or third time around, since they occurred prior to our learning how to "search" the Forum properly).

Re: computer question |
You familiar with the "Goldfish Principal?"
This is a universal concept along the lines of Occam's Razor, wherein:
Stuff grows to fill the space allotted...
A goldfish in a lake grows much larger than a goldfish in a bowl.
The larger the hard drive, the more stuff you store.
The more your earn, the more you spend.

Re: computer question |
Oh yeah...applies to my wife, esp. I will never forget when we first were married, 30 yrs ago, and arrived at our new rental with just over $100 in the bank...she worried a bit too much, I thought, but always insisted once we had $1000 tucked in the bank, she'd rest easy...
Think that turned out to be true? Still love her dearly, and her worry wart nature keeps her (us) from spending...I have to work had to explain/justify my DEAD related purchases.

Yeah--if you're not part of the solution ("wasting space" and "wasting your time"), you're just part of the problem (that being doing something useful, getting a life, being a productive member of non-Forum society, etc...Gadzooks! Who wants THAT!?!?).

Now, that was funny on a number of levels, C! I know that it's awk with some of the folks around here, but that sort of post makes it seem like you're one of the regulars...or, irregulars I suppose. Guerrilla warfare, Forum style.

Re: computer question |
Thanks Mando
I had no idea what FAT32 or NTFS was
Here is a pretty good link for us non-PC-Techie types
http://www.thundercloud.net/information-avenue/ntfs-vs-fat32/My background is in Mainframe IBM OS 390 -- JCL, Cobol, VSAM, CICS & DB2 so the PC jargon I ALWAYS have to look up.
